Spring Cleaning-Free 30 Day Declutter Challenge

I want to share a spring cleaning secret with you that will help you save time and money and guarantee an organized decluttered home. If you want a clean organized decluttered home, then use my unique and simple spring cleaning method. Here is how I discovered this simple technique!

Some twenty years ago, I accidentally fell on this very effective method for spring cleaning my home.  I had earnestly set up my spring cleaning list had cleaners in hand and then dropped a can of diet soda on the kitchen floor. It hit the tile and burst wide opened and sprayed all over the floor, the cabinets, the walls, and the ceiling. I almost set down and cried (well, actually, I did). What a total mess!

The Bottom-Up Cleaning Method

that Saves Time and Money

After gathering my wits, cleaners, and sponges, I sat back down on the floor and decided to start cleaning the cabinets. It was then that I saw a lot more dirt than diet soda. I realized that the room looked much different from this angle and that most of my cleaning happened at eye level.

Now, I know that most people don’t mind a bit of dirt here and there. But I mean when I got down on the floor, I could see a lot of spatters and spots. The baseboards were disgusting as well as the bottom of the cabinets. So, I began cleaning the kitchen from the bottom up to the baseboards (I did save the floor for last since I was walking on it while cleaning), the cabinets, the walls, and the ceiling. Now you could start cleaning at the ceiling level and down, but I felt that I would just kind of miss the lower cabinets and the baseboards using this method.

I discovered that the room looked much cleaner. It felt just like a thorough spring cleaning but much deeper.

So, I decided to try this bottom-up cleaning method in each room to get that organized decluttered home:

  • The laundry room
  • The living room
  • The den
  • The two bedrooms
  • The two bathrooms

To get to that organized decluttered home, I then did the same when cleaning the windows. Yes, starting at the bottom of the glass and up. Much more clean and fewer streaks. Two other things became evident to me. I was cleaning much faster and with fewer cleaners. It appeared that with such a solid method used in each and every room, I streamlined the cleaning process and was done in a half a day, rather than the two days that it usually took to completely spring clean the house.

This bottom-up cleaning method is a staple to obtaining a clean organized decluttered home. And I try to do this a couple of times a year, not just in the spring. I find that I spend less time cleaning each week and less time on intensive cleaning, due to the thorough cleaning that I did the previous month. I use fewer cleaning products. The best cleaners for me are vinegar and baking soda or washing soda. I have spray bottles with vinegar and use them to clean my countertops and sink each day. I also use it on my bathroom floors. Vinegar is a great mild cleaner. The smell does not bother me with full strength. If it bothers you, dilute it with water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. I can also highly recommend anything Mrs. Meyers which is sold at Target and most supermarkets. Cleaning erasers are your best friend in removing almost anything. But use caution here as they do remove paint if you rub too hard. Here is a link to the declutter area of my site where you can find answers to declutter once you have finished your spring cleaning.

Having a clean organized decluttered home from the bottom up feels cleaner, takes less time, and costs less. It is particularly important if you have small children as they are down at that level most of the time.
